Richard Mofe-Damijo has reached another milestone. The veteran actor, lawyer and former public official turns 65, with fans and colleagues celebrating his remarkable journey in Nollywood and beyond.
LAGOS, NIGERIA — Veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, widely known as RMD, is celebrating his 65th birthday today, July 6, 2026. Born on July 6, 1961, in Aladja, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, RMD has built a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in journalism, law, politics and the Nigerian film industry.
RMD began his educational journey at Midwest College, Warri, and Anglican Grammar School before studying Theatre Arts at the University of Benin. He later earned a Law degree from the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar. Before becoming one of Nollywood’s biggest stars, he worked as a reporter with Concord Newspapers and Metro Magazine.
His acting breakthrough came in the late 1980s and early 1990s through the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, productions Ripples and Checkmate, where his role as Segun Kadiri made him a household name. He later dominated the home video era with films including Diamond Ring, Scores to Settle, The Price and Out of Bounds. In the 2010s, he successfully reinvented his career with acclaimed performances in The Meeting, The Wedding Party, Merry Men, Love Is War, Fine Wine, Swallow, The Black Book and Christmas in Lagos.
Throughout his career, RMD has received several prestigious honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award, AMAA, for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2005, the AMAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and the AMVCA Industry Merit Award in 2024. Beyond entertainment, he served as Delta State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism between 2009 and 2015, where he promoted film production and tourism through initiatives such as the proposed Asaba Film Village project.
RMD was previously married to the late journalist and publisher MEE Mofe-Damijo and is now married to media personality Jumobi Adegbesan. He is a father of five and remains one of the most respected figures in Nigeria’s creative industry.
