Nigerian football legend Captain Jay-Jay Okocha has shared how he managed his finances during his playing career. He said he separated his income based on purpose and priorities.
LAGOS, NIGERIA — Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has revealed how he managed the different sources of income he earned during his football career, saying he used match bonuses to meet daily needs and support his family while preserving his salary as savings.

According to Okocha, match bonuses covered essential expenses such as food, clothing and financial support for members of his family. He explained that he treated his salary differently by saving it, while income from endorsement deals funded luxury purchases, including cars, expensive watches and holidays.
Speaking on his approach to personal finance, Okocha said, “I used match bonuses for food, clothes and to support my family, while I used endorsement money for cars and expensive watch and vacation. I saved all my salary.”
Okocha enjoyed a distinguished football career, representing clubs in Germany, Türkiye, France, England and Qatar. He also captained the Super Eagles and played a key role in several major tournaments, earning widespread recognition as one of Nigeria’s greatest footballers. Since retiring, he has frequently shared advice on football development and life after professional sports.
The development means Okocha’s remarks may encourage young athletes to adopt disciplined financial planning throughout their careers. Financial experts often advise professional athletes to diversify their income, prioritise savings and invest wisely to secure long-term financial stability after retirement.
