Relief has come for families of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State. Nigerian security forces have secured their release after weeks of coordinated rescue operations
IBADAN, OYO STATE — Nigerian security forces have secured the release of Abducted Oyo Pupils and teachers who were abducted by suspected Ansaru terrorists in Oyo State on May 15, 2026, following a joint intelligence-led search and rescue operation, according to information released by the Defence Headquarters.
According to the military, the operation concluded on July 9, 2026, after weeks of coordinated intelligence gathering and tactical operations. The Defence Headquarters said the rescue mission followed a direct mandate from President Bola Tinubu and was carried out by a Joint Inter-Agency Task Force comprising personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The Defence Headquarters said the agencies worked together throughout the operation to locate the victims and secure their safe release. However, the military did not immediately disclose the number of pupils and teachers rescued or provide details on whether any suspects were arrested during the operation. It also did not state whether any ransom was paid.
The victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, in an incident linked to suspected Ansaru members. The abduction raised fresh concerns about the security of schools in parts of Nigeria and renewed calls for stronger measures to protect students, teachers and other vulnerable communities from armed groups.
The development means security agencies are continuing coordinated operations against terrorist groups operating across the country. Attention is now expected to shift to the medical care and rehabilitation of the rescued victims, while investigators work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the abduction. Authorities are also expected to strengthen security around schools to prevent similar incidents.
