ATLANTA, UNITED STATES — Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has revealed that Nigeria’s football team faced financial and logistical challenges during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games despite going on to win the country’s first Olympic football gold medal. He shared the account while reflecting on the team’s memorable campaign.
According to Okocha, officials of the then Nigeria Football Association (NFA) did not settle the team’s hotel and feeding expenses on time. He said the players repeatedly ate the same meal for several days before discovering that their accommodation and catering bills had not been paid.
Recalling the experience, Okocha said, “We won the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but the process was tough. The NFA didn’t pay for our hotel, we ate the same meal for a week. They kept giving us rice and sauce every day and one day, we asked why they were not changing our meal. They said we should be thankful we were still there because the NFA hadn’t paid for our meal and accommodation.” He added that the players eventually used their own money to pay for accommodation and rented mini vans to remain in camp.
Nigeria’s football team made history at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games by defeating some of the world’s strongest teams before overcoming Argentina 3-2 in the final to win the gold medal. The victory remains one of the greatest achievements in the history of Nigerian football and African football at the Olympic Games.
The development means Okocha’s comments have renewed discussions about the welfare of Nigerian athletes representing the country at major international competitions.
