LAGOS STATE — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the demolition of shanties and illegal structures along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, giving occupants 72 hours to vacate the affected areas. According to the Lagos State Government, the action forms part of efforts to restore order and address environmental concerns along the major transport corridor.
State officials said the affected structures were erected illegally and had contributed to environmental challenges and obstruction along sections of the expressway. The government maintained that the demolition exercise would help improve sanitation, public safety and the ongoing development of the corridor.
According to government officials recieved by Extra News Nigeria, residents and occupants of the affected structures have been advised to remove their belongings before the expiration of the notice period. Authorities warned that enforcement teams would begin demolition activities immediately after the 72-hour deadline.
The Lagos-Badagry Expressway remains one of the state’s key transport routes and has witnessed several urban renewal and infrastructure projects in recent years. The state government has repeatedly carried out similar exercises to remove illegal structures and reclaim public spaces across different parts of Lagos.
The development means hundreds of occupants of the affected shanties may be displaced once the demolition exercise begins. It also signals the Lagos State Government’s continued efforts to enforce urban planning regulations and improve environmental conditions along one of the state’s busiest highways.
