LAGOS, NIGERIA — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 67-year-old Nigerian-British woman after officers allegedly recovered 13 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside processed plantain peels at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. According to a statement issued by the anti-narcotics agency, the suspect attempted to export the illicit substance through the airport before operatives intercepted her during routine checks.
The agency said its officers identified the suspicious luggage during passenger screening and subjected it to further examination. NDLEA officials stated that a detailed search uncovered multiple parcels of cocaine carefully concealed inside packaged plantain peels, with the total weight estimated at 13 kilograms. The agency added that investigators have commenced efforts to determine the source of the consignment and its intended destination.
According to the statement, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.) commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism. The agency reiterated its commitment to strengthening surveillance at airports, seaports and border posts to prevent illicit trafficking. NDLEA also said the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue in line with the provisions of Nigeria’s drug control laws.
The arrest adds to a series of interceptions recorded by the agency in recent months as authorities intensify efforts to disrupt international trafficking networks operating through Nigeria’s airports. NDLEA has consistently maintained that traffickers now employ increasingly sophisticated concealment methods, including disguising prohibited substances inside food items and everyday consumer products to evade security checks.
The development means investigators will focus on identifying other individuals connected to the shipment and determining whether the suspect acted alone or as part of a wider trafficking network. NDLEA is expected to conclude its investigation before taking further legal action in accordance with Nigerian law. The agency has also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that can assist security agencies in preventing organised criminal activities.
