ABUJA, FCT — Abayomi Arabambi, a chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), has given the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, seven days to withdraw remarks he described as defamatory, apologise publicly and pay N50 billion in damages. The demand was contained in a legal notice issued on Arabambi’s behalf, according to media reports.
According to the notice, Arabambi alleged that Obi made statements that injured his reputation and exposed him to public ridicule. He insisted that the former Anambra State governor should publish a clear retraction and apology within seven days or face legal action. The legal team also demanded N50 billion as compensation for the alleged damage caused by the remarks.
The notice stated that failure to comply with the demands within the specified period would leave Arabambi with no option but to seek redress in court. His lawyers maintained that the legal action would aim to protect his reputation and recover damages for the alleged defamatory statements. At the time of filing this report, Peter Obi had not publicly responded to the allegations or the demands contained in the notice.
The latest dispute adds to the internal disagreements that have affected the Labour Party since the 2023 general election. The party has witnessed leadership disagreements, legal battles and competing claims over its national structure, with several members taking disputes before the courts.
