Tokunbo Wahab has accused some critics of politicising the recent flooding in Lagos, insisting that the state government is implementing measures to reduce flood risks.
LAGOS, NIGERIA — Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, has said some individuals are politicising the recent flooding across parts of the state. According to the commissioner, the government has continued to invest in drainage infrastructure and flood control projects aimed at reducing the impact of heavy rainfall on residents.
Wahab said the flooding followed intense rainfall combined with the state’s coastal geography and the effects of climate change. He noted that drainage channels require continuous maintenance and urged residents to avoid dumping refuse into waterways, saying blocked drains contribute significantly to flooding in many communities. According to him, the government has carried out several drainage clearance operations before and during the rainy season.
The commissioner maintained that the state has recorded improvements in flood management due to ongoing infrastructure projects. He said officials would continue to monitor flood-prone areas, expand drainage networks and strengthen emergency response measures. According to Wahab, the government remains committed to protecting lives and property through sustained environmental interventions.
