- President Bola Tinubu has signed the NIMC Act 2026 into law, bringing tougher penalties for identity fraud and reforms to Nigeria’s digital identity system.
President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Act 2026 into law in Abuja, introducing stricter punishments for identity-related offences and strengthening Nigeria’s digital identity framework. According to information released by the Presidency, the new law seeks to improve the management and protection of citizens’ identity data.
The legislation introduces tougher sanctions for identity fraud and related offences, including jail terms of up to five years for offenders. The law also provides a legal framework for a more comprehensive digital identity system aimed at improving data management and service delivery across government institutions.
According to details released after the signing, the new Act strengthens the powers of the National Identity Management Commission and creates a clearer legal basis for the collection, storage and protection of identity information. Officials said the reforms would support national planning, financial inclusion and the delivery of public services.
The NIMC Act replaces several outdated provisions and aligns Nigeria’s identity management system with modern digital standards. The Federal Government has repeatedly stated that a reliable national identity database remains critical to security, economic planning and the implementation of social intervention programmes.
The development means Nigerians may face stricter consequences for identity fraud and other offences linked to the misuse of identity information. It also signals the Federal Government’s push toward a more integrated digital identity ecosystem that could affect banking, telecommunications, taxation and access to government services in the years ahead.
