ABUJA, NIGERIA — President Bola Tinubu has approved 27 road projects valued at N3.9 trillion across 15 states as the Federal Government steps up efforts to improve road infrastructure and strengthen economic activities nationwide.

The approval forms part of the administration’s ongoing investment in critical infrastructure aimed at improving transportation, easing the movement of goods and people, and supporting economic development. According to information released by the Federal Government, the projects will cover strategic highways and major road corridors linking different parts of the country.

The approved projects are expected to address long-standing challenges on several federal roads, many of which have suffered years of deterioration. Government officials said the roads were selected based on their economic importance, traffic volume and their role in connecting commercial centres across Nigeria.

According to the Federal Government, the projects will be executed in phases and funded through approved budgetary allocations and other financing arrangements. The administration said improving road infrastructure remains one of its priorities to support trade, agriculture, manufacturing and regional integration.

Road users and businesses have repeatedly raised concerns over the poor condition of several federal highways, citing rising transportation costs, longer travel times and increased vehicle maintenance expenses. Economic analysts have also noted that better road networks can reduce logistics costs, improve market access for farmers and encourage private sector investment.

Data reviewed by Extra News Nigeria show that infrastructure development has remained a major component of the Federal Government’s economic agenda, with significant allocations made to roads, rail and other transport projects in recent budgets. Analysts, however, say timely funding, quality construction and proper supervision will determine whether the projects deliver the expected benefits.

The approval of the road projects comes at a time when many Nigerians are calling for improved infrastructure to support economic recovery and ease the cost of doing business. Attention will now shift to the award of contracts, project timelines and implementation across the affected states as stakeholders monitor progress.
