The Senate has approved another major legislative proposal. Lawmakers voted in favour of a bill that seeks to create a dedicated agency to manage recovered assets across Nigeria.

ABUJA, FCT — The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish an independent agency responsible for the recovery, preservation and management of assets linked to alleged unlawful activities. According to the upper legislative chamber, the proposed agency aims to improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in the handling of assets recovered by government authorities.

The bill seeks to create a single institution that will oversee recovered assets instead of leaving the responsibility with multiple agencies. Lawmakers said the proposed framework would provide clear guidelines for the identification, preservation and disposal of recovered properties in line with existing laws. The Senate noted that the measure is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s asset management system.

During deliberations, senators said the proposed agency would help reduce administrative challenges associated with managing recovered assets and improve public confidence in the process. They added that a centralised system would enhance coordination among anti-corruption institutions and ensure that recovered assets are properly documented and protected. The bill will proceed to the next stage of the legislative process in accordance with constitutional procedures.

Nigeria has introduced several anti-corruption measures over the years, with agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) playing key roles in asset recovery. Stakeholders have, however, continued to advocate for a unified legal framework to improve the management of recovered assets and prevent disputes over their administration.

The development means Nigeria could soon have a specialised institution dedicated to managing recovered assets if the proposed legislation completes the legislative process and receives presidential assent. Supporters of the bill believe the agency could strengthen accountability, while its implementation will depend on the final provisions approved by the National Assembly and the Federal Government.
