The Nigeria Police have taken disciplinary action against two officers in Delta State. The punishment followed allegations that they used a POS machine to collect money from members of the public.
ASABA, DELTA STATE — The Delta State Police Command has demoted an inspector and a corporal after they were caught allegedly using a Point of Sale, POS, machine to extort money from members of the public. The disciplinary action followed an internal investigation, according to a statement issued by the command.
According to the police, the two officers violated the Nigeria Police Force’s directive prohibiting officers from collecting money through electronic payment channels, including POS terminals, during official duties. The command said the inspector was reduced in rank to the position of sergeant, while the corporal was also demoted in line with established disciplinary procedures. Authorities added that the sanctions reflect the Force’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.
The Delta State Police Command reiterated that extortion and other forms of misconduct remain unacceptable within the Force. The command warned officers against demanding or receiving money from members of the public in violation of operational guidelines. It also encouraged residents to report any cases of misconduct involving police personnel through the appropriate complaint channels.
The Nigeria Police Force has repeatedly maintained that officers are prohibited from collecting money through bank transfers, POS terminals or other electronic payment methods while carrying out official duties. The Force has introduced disciplinary measures in recent years to address complaints of extortion, abuse of office and other unethical conduct, with several officers facing sanctions across different commands.
