Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed concern over the worsening hunger situation in Northern Nigeria, calling for urgent action to address the crisis.
ABUJA, NIGERIA — Peter Obi has warned that the hunger crisis in Northern Nigeria is becoming more severe, saying millions of residents now face serious food shortages. According to a statement shared by the former Labour Party presidential candidate, about 17 million people are experiencing crisis-level hunger, a situation he linked to insecurity and leadership challenges.
Obi said prolonged insecurity in farming communities has reduced agricultural activities and disrupted food production across several northern states. He added that economic hardship has also increased pressure on households, making it difficult for many families to afford basic food items. According to his statement, Nigeria requires stronger leadership and coordinated policies to improve food production and protect farming communities.
The former Anambra State governor urged governments at all levels to place greater priority on agriculture, security, and rural development. He said investments in farming, support for local food producers, and improved protection for farmers would help reduce food shortages and strengthen national food security. Obi also called for practical measures to support vulnerable communities facing the greatest challenges.
