Former presidential candidate Peter Obi visited two INEC voter registration centres in Anambra and urged Nigerians to register and participate in democracy.
ANAMBRA, NIGERIA — Peter Obi on Thursday paid impromptu visits to voter registration centres operated by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Nibo and Nri communities of Anambra State, according to a statement released by the former governor.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate visited the Civic Centre in Nibo and Nrijiofor Primary School in Nri while returning to the state for scheduled engagements. According to the statement, Obi expressed satisfaction with the turnout of citizens at the registration centres and commended those who had already completed their registration.
Obi urged eligible Nigerians who have not registered to take advantage of the ongoing exercise before the deadline. He said voter registration remains an important civic responsibility and a key step toward achieving good governance in Nigeria. The statement also said he encouraged registered voters to persuade family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues to participate in the exercise.
“Registering to vote is not just a civic responsibility, it is an investment in the Nigeria we all desire,” Obi said in the statement. He added that the journey to good governance begins with voter registration and not only on Election Day. The former governor also noted that every registered voter strengthens Nigeria’s democracy.
Obi has repeatedly called on Nigerians, especially young people, to participate in democratic processes through voter registration and active civic engagement. INEC has continued nationwide voter registration efforts ahead of future electoral activities, with the commission encouraging eligible citizens to obtain their voter credentials before the exercise closes.
The development means more political leaders and stakeholders may intensify campaigns aimed at increasing voter participation across the country. Higher voter registration numbers could lead to broader citizen involvement in future elections and strengthen democratic representation in Nigeria as preparations for upcoming electoral activities continue.
