ABUJA, NIGERIA — Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has said he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president. Speaking during a public engagement, Obi maintained that his interest is centred on improving governance rather than occupying public office, according to remarks circulated by his media team and widely shared on social media.
Obi said the country’s economic conditions have made it difficult for many business owners to operate successfully. According to him, several businesses continue to face rising operational costs, declining purchasing power and other economic pressures that have affected their ability to remain competitive.
The former Anambra State governor also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming the current leadership appears “tired” and arguing that Nigeria requires fresh ideas to address its economic and governance challenges. He said the country’s leadership should focus on policies that improve productivity, create jobs and restore confidence among investors and citizens.
Obi has repeatedly positioned himself as an advocate for economic reforms, prudent public spending and institutional accountability. Since the 2023 presidential election, he has continued to comment on national issues, particularly the economy, security and governance, while remaining a prominent opposition figure ahead of future political contests.
The Presidency has not publicly responded to Obi’s latest remarks at the time of filing this report. Previous responses from government officials have defended the administration’s economic reforms, arguing they are necessary to stabilise the economy and deliver long-term growth.
The development means political exchanges between the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and opposition leaders are likely to intensify as discussions about Nigeria’s economic direction and the 2027 general election continue. Analysts expect debates over governance, economic performance and leadership to remain central issues in the country’s political landscape.
