Peter Obi has intensified his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The former Anambra governor said worsening economic conditions have forced many business owners into petty trading.
ABUJA, FCT — Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and leading opposition figure, has claimed that many Nigerians who owned businesses before President Bola Tinubu assumed office are now struggling to survive because of the country’s economic challenges. Obi made the remarks during a public event as political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election continue.
According to Obi, the economic situation has weakened many businesses that were operating before the current administration came into office. He argued that rising inflation, the increasing cost of living and other economic pressures have made it difficult for many entrepreneurs to sustain their operations.
Speaking at the event, Obi said, “People who had businesses when you came into power are now people who are selling kuli-kuli.” He used the statement to support his criticism of the Federal Government’s economic policies, maintaining that many Nigerians have experienced a decline in their standard of living since the current administration began.
The Tinubu administration has consistently defended its economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange policy changes. Government officials have argued that the measures were necessary to stabilise the economy, improve public finances and attract long-term investment, although they acknowledge that the reforms have created short-term economic challenges for many Nigerians.
The development means the state of Nigeria’s economy will remain a major issue in national political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections. Economic performance, job creation, business growth and the cost of living are expected to feature prominently as political parties present their records and policy proposals to voters in the coming months.
