NDLEA officers uncovered thousands of concealed tramadol capsules during a vehicle inspection. The discovery exposed another attempt to move prohibited substances through Nigeria’s transport network
NIGERIA — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 43,980 capsules of tramadol hidden inside the fuel tanks of vehicles during an anti-smuggling operation. According to a statement by the agency, operatives discovered the concealed capsules after carrying out intelligence-led searches on the vehicles at a checkpoint.
NDLEA said the traffickers modified the fuel tanks to create secret compartments where the tramadol capsules were stored to avoid detection. The agency stated that officers recovered all the capsules during the operation and seized the affected vehicles as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials added that the operation formed part of efforts to disrupt trafficking routes used by criminal networks across the country.
According to the statement, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.) praised the operatives for their professionalism and vigilance. He said the agency remains committed to strengthening intelligence gathering and operational strategies to prevent the movement of prohibited substances through Nigeria’s highways, airports and other entry points. NDLEA also confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify everyone connected to the shipment.
The seizure comes as the agency continues to report major interceptions involving concealed narcotics across different parts of Nigeria. In recent months, traffickers have increasingly relied on sophisticated concealment methods, including hiding prohibited substances in food items, luggage, automobile components and specially modified compartments. NDLEA has repeatedly warned that criminal groups continue to adopt new techniques to evade security checks.
The development means authorities may intensify inspections of commercial and private vehicles travelling across major routes in Nigeria. The outcome of the investigation could help security agencies identify additional members of the trafficking network and prevent similar operations.
