LAGOS, NIGERIA – A Nigerian man has shared a candid account of the challenges he and his wife faced during their nine-year marriage, saying the difficult moments helped them grow into a stronger and more understanding couple.
In a post that has attracted attention on social media, the man admitted that there were periods when disagreements affected communication in their home. He recalled rejecting meals prepared by his wife for more than a week after a quarrel, despite continuing to provide money for household expenses.
He also revealed that there was another occasion when he and his wife did not speak to each other for nearly three weeks. According to him, both of them have since matured and no longer handle disagreements in the same way.
Reflecting on their journey, he wrote that marriage is a union of “two imperfect people looking to build something.” He explained that many behaviours displayed during disagreements gradually changed as they both became more experienced in handling conflicts.
The man also argued that some actions taken during marital disputes, such as temporarily blocking a spouse on social media or communication platforms, should not automatically be interpreted as the end of a relationship. According to him, people often react emotionally during conflicts but may later outgrow such habits as the marriage develops.
He further suggested that many people offer strong opinions about marriage without firsthand experience. In his view, couples only discover how they truly respond to pressure after getting married. He added that disagreements serious enough to make one partner consider leaving the relationship are not uncommon and can become opportunities for growth if both individuals remain committed to resolving their differences.
The comments have generated mixed reactions online. While some social media users agreed that marriage requires patience, forgiveness and continuous learning, others argued that prolonged silence and emotional withdrawal are unhealthy ways of managing conflict and should be addressed through open communication.
Relationship counsellors have consistently advised couples to resolve disagreements respectfully and seek constructive ways to communicate during difficult periods. They note that every marriage is different and that healthy conflict resolution, mutual respect and willingness to grow together often play important roles in sustaining long-term relationships.
As the discussion continues on social media, the man’s reflections have resonated with many married couples who say no relationship is perfect. His experience highlights the reality that lasting marriages often involve learning from mistakes, adapting to challenges and working together to build a stronger partnership over time.
