Flooding continues to threaten many parts of Lagos State. A state commissioner says illegal reclamation and poor environmental practices remain the major causes of the problem.
IKEJA, LAGOS — Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, has blamed illegal land reclamation and illegal dredging for the persistent flooding recorded across parts of Lagos State. According to the commissioner, harmful environmental practices have continued to worsen the state’s flood challenges despite ongoing government interventions.
Wahab said residents and developers must take responsibility for actions that obstruct the natural flow of water. According to him, illegal reclamation, unauthorised dredging, and poor environmental habits have contributed significantly to the increasing incidence of flooding in several communities across the state.
Speaking on the issue, the commissioner said, “It is important to identify what the problem is in the first place, and the problem is nothing other than bad habits. I mean, illegal reclamation and illegal dredging affect it on one hand, habits affect it on the other hand.” He urged residents to comply with environmental regulations and support government efforts to reduce flooding.
The Lagos State Government has repeatedly warned against building on drainage channels, dumping refuse into waterways, and carrying out unauthorised reclamation activities. Environmental officials have also intensified enforcement operations and public awareness campaigns aimed at protecting drainage infrastructure, especially during the rainy season.
The development means the state government is likely to strengthen enforcement against illegal reclamation and dredging while expanding public sensitisation efforts. Authorities expect greater compliance with environmental laws to improve water flow, reduce flood risks, and protect lives and property across Lagos State during periods of heavy rainfall.
