A new report has raised fresh concerns about the evolving tactics of Boko Haram. The findings suggest the insurgent group may be exploiting artificial intelligence tools to support its operations.

ABUJA, FCT — A new report has alleged that Boko Haram is attempting to use artificial intelligence, AI, tools to enhance aspects of its operations, highlighting emerging security challenges for Nigeria and other countries confronting violent extremist groups. The report says the development reflects how rapidly evolving technologies can also attract misuse by criminal and terrorist organisations.

According to the report, security researchers observed attempts by members or supporters of the insurgent group to exploit publicly available AI tools despite safeguards designed to prevent harmful use. The report argues that such efforts demonstrate the need for continuous improvements in AI safety measures and closer cooperation between technology companies and security agencies. Extra News Nigeria has not independently verified all the findings contained in the report.

The report calls on governments, technology firms and security stakeholders to strengthen monitoring, intelligence sharing and digital safety measures to reduce the risk of extremist groups abusing emerging technologies. It also recommends continued investment in counterterrorism capabilities and responsible AI governance to address evolving threats while protecting legitimate users of the technology.

Boko Haram has carried out violent attacks in parts of northeastern Nigeria for more than a decade, leading to thousands of deaths, widespread displacement and humanitarian challenges. Security agencies have continued operations against the group, while international organisations have warned that terrorist groups increasingly seek to exploit digital technologies for propaganda, recruitment and other unlawful activities.

The development means security agencies and technology companies may face increased pressure to strengthen safeguards against the misuse of AI by violent extremist groups. Experts continue to stress that while artificial intelligence offers significant benefits across many sectors, responsible oversight and collaboration remain essential to limit its exploitation for criminal or terrorist purposes.
