Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said he belonged to the wrong political party before leaving the PDP for the APC.
ABUJA, FCT — Godswill Akpabio said he was in the wrong political party when he belonged to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and found his political home after joining the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Senate President made the remark during a public event in Abuja, according to a video that circulated on social media.
Akpabio said he discovered that his political beliefs aligned more with the APC than the PDP. In the video, he described the APC as a party of progressives and said his decision to leave the PDP helped him find his political direction.
Speaking in the video, the Senate President said he had been in the “wrong party” before joining the APC. He stated that he now feels more comfortable in the ruling party and believes it better represents his political ideals. The statement has since attracted reactions from political supporters and opponents.
Akpabio was a former governor of Akwa Ibom State and once served as a minister under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari after leaving the PDP. He later emerged as Senate President under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, one of the top leaders of the APC.
The development means Akpabio’s comments could renew discussions about political defections and party loyalty in Nigeria’s political space. His remarks may also add to ongoing debates about the movement of prominent politicians between major parties ahead of future political activities and alignments.
