WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Pastor Enoch Adeboye has defended President Bola Tinubu against criticism over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, saying the president has carried out his constitutional responsibility by directing the country’s security agencies.
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) made the remarks during the US-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala organised by the Save Nigeria Group in Washington, D.C., on June 23. According to Adeboye, those accusing Tinubu of not doing enough to address insecurity are overlooking the role of a commander-in-chief.
“I need to make this one clear: I don’t support those who are accusing the president of not doing enough. When the commander-in-chief has given instructions to his subordinates, he has done his bit. You don’t expect him to go and put on khaki and fight,” Adeboye said.
To explain his position, the cleric compared Tinubu’s role with that of United States President Donald Trump, saying political leaders issue directives while military personnel execute them. He said when a commander-in-chief authorises military action, the responsibility for carrying out those orders rests with the armed forces.
Despite defending the president, Adeboye acknowledged that Nigeria’s security situation remains a major concern. He said terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes have spread beyond northern Nigeria into southern parts of the country.
According to the RCCG leader, the situation has become so serious that many people are questioning where hope can be found. He also claimed that those sponsoring violent activities are known but continue to move about freely. However, he did not identify any individuals or provide evidence to support that assertion.
Adeboye disclosed that he had personally discussed the country’s security challenges with President Tinubu and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who is also a pastor in the RCCG. He did not reveal details of those discussions.
Nigeria has continued to face security challenges, including kidnappings, armed attacks and insurgent activities in different parts of the country. The Federal Government has repeatedly said it is strengthening military operations, improving intelligence gathering and working with security agencies to restore peace across affected communities.
Adeboye’s comments are expected to generate public discussion because they come at a time when many Nigerians continue to demand stronger action against insecurity. While his remarks defend the constitutional role of the president as commander-in-chief, they also underscore the urgent need for measurable improvements in security and greater protection for communities across the country.
