Fresh controversy has emerged after Mr Ibu’s wife confirmed that some of the late actor’s properties were sold before Nigerians donated money to support the family.
IKEJA, LAGOS — Stella Maris Okafor, the widow of late Nollywood actor Mr Ibu, has come under public scrutiny after confirming that some of the actor’s properties were sold. The issue gained attention after reports emerged that Nigerians donated N7.5 million to assist the family with rent and school fees.
According to comments circulating online, properties linked to the late actor included a Lagos house reportedly sold for N60 million, an Enugu property sold for N17 million and another property in Asaba sold for N11 million. The reported sales amount to about N88 million, although details of how the funds were spent remain unclear.
During an interview that resurfaced online, Mr Ibu’s wife acknowledged that the properties were sold. She stated that she was not the only person involved in the transactions and said two of the actor’s sons also participated in the sale of the assets. She also spoke about her means of livelihood, saying she runs an Instagram page and sells jewellery.
The latest development has generated mixed reactions on social media, with many Nigerians questioning how the proceeds from the property sales were used. Others, however, urged the public not to rush to conclusions, noting that the family may have faced medical bills, legal expenses and other financial obligations following the actor’s prolonged health challenges.
Mr Ibu, whose real name was John Okafor, was one of Nollywood’s most celebrated comic actors and appeared in several successful movies during his career. Before his death, the actor battled health complications that attracted widespread public support and donations from fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry.
The development means questions surrounding the management of the late actor’s estate are likely to remain in the public space. It has also renewed discussions about financial planning, estate management and the welfare of families left behind by prominent entertainers.
