Ondo State, Akure — The Ondo State Government has sanctioned 17 SS3 students from schools in Akure following a viral sign-out celebration video that allegedly showed acts of indiscipline. According to the state Ministry of Education, the affected students will not receive their WASSCE results and school testimonials for the time being.
The ministry said the disciplinary action followed an investigation into the incident, which attracted attention on social media. Authorities also directed that the names of the affected students be entered into a “Black Book” for misconduct, a move officials said would serve as a record of the disciplinary action.
According to the ministry, the sanctions were necessary to promote discipline and discourage similar behaviour among other students. Officials maintained that schools must remain places where students uphold acceptable standards of conduct, even during end-of-session celebrations.
The incident has generated mixed reactions from members of the public. While some people supported the government’s decision and described it as a strong message against indiscipline, others questioned whether withholding examination results indefinitely was an appropriate punishment.
Sign-out celebrations have become increasingly popular among graduating secondary school students across Nigeria. However, some schools and education authorities have repeatedly warned students against activities considered inappropriate or capable of damaging the image of educational institutions.
