One year after a devastating abduction, the pain has not faded. A Nigerian woman has shared the heartbreaking story of how her family lost two loved ones despite paying a ransom.
ABUJA, FCT — A Nigerian woman has recounted the painful loss of her uncle and cousin one year after they died during a bandit abduction, saying the tragedy continues to affect her family. She shared the account in a social media post marking the anniversary of the incident, describing the emotional impact the ordeal has had on those left behind.
According to the woman, her late uncle and his two sons were abducted while travelling to Lagos last year. She said the kidnappers demanded an ₦11 million ransom, which the family eventually raised and paid in the hope that all three victims would regain their freedom.
The woman alleged that while they remained in captivity, her uncle asked his captors for water after becoming thirsty. She claimed that after he questioned why they were being treated harshly despite the ransom demand, one of the abductors fatally attacked him in the presence of his two sons. She further alleged that, despite receiving the full ransom, the abductors also took the life of one of the sons before releasing the other. According to her, the bodies of her uncle and cousin were never recovered.
She said the incident left lasting emotional scars on the family, especially her uncle’s wife, whom she described as still struggling to recover from the trauma. “One year has passed, but the pain remains as deep as ever. The tragedy shattered our family, and my uncle’s wife has never truly recovered,” she wrote while praying for the repose of the victims and comfort for those they left behind.
The development highlights the continuing human cost of banditry and kidnapping in parts of Nigeria, where many families have reported suffering devastating losses even after meeting ransom demands.
