A wedding celebration has turned into a friendship dispute after a woman claimed she was blocked for refusing to send an additional cash gift. Her story has generated widespread reactions on social media.
BENIN CITY, EDO STATE — A Nigerian woman has alleged that a friend blocked her after she declined to send a ₦25,000 cash gift for her wedding despite spending close to ₦100,000 on aso ebi and other wedding-related contributions. She shared her account in a social media post that has attracted widespread attention.
According to the woman, she became friends with the bride toward the end of last year after they met at work. She said the bride later informed her about plans to get married in Benin City and invited her to join the aso ebi group. The woman claimed she initially explained that travelling to Benin might be difficult because of the distance, but she still agreed to purchase the aso ebi fabric, which she said cost ₦40,000.
She further alleged that members of the group contributed ₦15,000 each toward a surprise package for the bride and made additional financial contributions for other wedding arrangements. According to her, the total amount she spent reached nearly ₦100,000.
The woman said she later informed the bride that she could no longer attend the wedding because she could not afford the transportation cost, which she estimated at about ₦50,000 for a return trip. She claimed she asked the bride to keep the aso ebi fabric, but was later surprised when the bride allegedly requested that she send the transport money as a wedding gift instead. According to her, the bride suggested that if she could not send the full amount, she should transfer at least ₦25,000.
She alleged that after explaining her financial situation, the bride posted a message in the aso ebi group accusing some members of not supporting her wedding and saying she intended to cut ties with them after the ceremony. The woman claimed she and another member of the group were blocked after the wedding, even though the second person reportedly attended the event.
The development means conversations about wedding expectations and financial obligations among friends are likely to continue on social media.
