SOKOTO, NIGERIA — The Sokoto State Police Command has foiled a bandit attack on Daraye Village in Wamako Local Government Area of Sokoto State, neutralising one suspected bandit and recovering an AK-47 rifle. According to a statement by the command, security operatives engaged the armed group during a coordinated operation after receiving intelligence about the planned attack.

The police said officers confronted the suspects as they attempted to invade the community, leading to an exchange of fire. During the operation, one suspected bandit was neutralised, while others reportedly fled into nearby bushes with varying degrees of injuries. The command added that operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle and other items from the scene, while efforts continue to track down the fleeing suspects.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information that could assist security agencies in identifying criminal hideouts and preventing future attacks. It also assured members of the public that patrols and intelligence-led operations have been intensified in vulnerable communities.

Banditry has remained a major security challenge in parts of northwestern Nigeria, including Sokoto State. Security agencies have continued to carry out joint operations aimed at disrupting the activities of armed groups responsible for attacks on rural communities, abductions and other criminal activities. The Federal Government has also strengthened collaboration among security agencies to improve intelligence gathering and enhance public safety.

The development means security presence is expected to increase in Wamako Local Government Area and surrounding communities as police pursue the fleeing suspects. The Sokoto State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace across the state and urged the public to promptly report suspicious movements to the nearest security agency.
