The Federal Government says new National Youth Service Corps uniforms will soon switch to locally produced Adire fabrics from Ogun and Kwara states.
ABUJA, FCT — Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, has confirmed that the current National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, uniforms will be replaced with Adire fabrics produced in Ogun State and Kwara State. The minister made the announcement while responding to questions on whether the new uniforms would be produced in Nigeria, according to remarks shared by the ministry.
The minister said the initiative forms part of efforts to promote local industries and encourage the use of Nigerian-made products. According to him, the Adire fabrics will come from local producers in Ogun and Kwara, two states widely known for textile production and traditional fabric designs.
Speaking on the proposed change, Ayodele Olawande said the government wants the NYSC scheme to support local businesses and create more opportunities for Nigerian manufacturers. The minister explained that producing the uniforms locally would also encourage investment in the textile sector and strengthen indigenous production.
The NYSC scheme has used its current khaki uniforms for decades and remains one of Nigeria’s most recognised national symbols. In recent years, the Federal Government has introduced policies that encourage government institutions to patronise locally made goods as part of broader economic development plans.
The development means local textile producers in Ogun and Kwara states could see increased demand and new business opportunities if the policy takes effect. It also signals a renewed push by the Federal Government to promote Nigerian-made products and reduce reliance on imported materials in public institutions.
