ABUJA, FCT , Bola Tinubu has launched a training programme aimed at equipping 5,000 young Nigerians with skills to become meter installers as part of efforts to close the country’s metering gap and create employment opportunities. According to a statement from the Presidency, the initiative forms part of ongoing reforms in the electricity sector.
The programme seeks to provide technical training for young Nigerians who will support the installation of electricity meters in homes and businesses nationwide. According to the government, the initiative will also help improve access to metering services and reduce complaints related to estimated billing.
The Presidency said the training programme aligns with the administration’s plan to expand opportunities for youths and improve service delivery in the power sector. The statement noted that trained installers would contribute to faster meter deployment and strengthen the country’s electricity distribution network.
Nigeria has faced a significant metering gap for several years, with millions of electricity consumers relying on estimated billing due to the shortage of installed meters. Successive governments and industry stakeholders have introduced programmes aimed at increasing the number of metered customers and improving transparency in electricity billing.
