A Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed the leadership of the African Democratic Congress ADC, validating the appointments of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola.
ABUJA, FCT — The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday affirmed the leadership of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, declaring the emergence of David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary as valid. The court also dismissed a suit challenging their appointments.
Delivering judgment, Justice Musa Liman upheld the preliminary objections filed by the ADC, former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola against the lawsuit brought by House of Representatives member Leke Abejide. The judge ruled that the suit lacked merit and could not succeed.
The legal challenge had sought to question the legitimacy of the party’s new leadership structure. However, the court’s decision has effectively endorsed the transition that produced David Mark and Aregbesola as key leaders of the opposition party.
David Mark, a former President of the Senate, recently assumed leadership of the ADC as part of efforts to reposition the party and strengthen its political base. Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State and former Minister of Interior, also took up the role of National Secretary in the party’s new arrangement.
The judgment comes at a time when political realignments continue within Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of future electoral contests. Analysts have noted that leadership stability remains critical for parties seeking to expand their influence and attract new members.
The development means the ADC leadership under David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola can continue its activities without the immediate legal uncertainty created by the lawsuit. It also gives the party a clearer path to focus on internal reforms and preparations for future political engagements.
