LAGOS, NIGERIA – Dr Zo, a Canada-based Nigerian doctor, has stirred conversations on social media after advising men not to base marriage decisions solely on a woman’s sexual history.
The medical doctor shared the opinion while recounting advice he said he recently gave to a Nigerian friend living abroad. According to Dr Zo, his friend considered ending his planned marriage after learning that the woman had previously been in relationships with two men he personally knew in Nigeria.
Speaking on the issue, Dr Zo argued that a person’s “body count” should not be the deciding factor when choosing a life partner. He said people often place too much emphasis on sexual history while overlooking qualities such as character, maturity and compatibility.
“Forget about body count. Body count doesn’t always count. Sometimes it’s better to marry a lady who has gone into the world and experienced life than to marry one who hasn’t,” he said.
He also suggested that some people who appear to have little or no relationship history may still engage in behaviour unknown to others. “Those you think are less evil, what they are doing behind the scenes will shock you,” he added.
The comments have generated mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some users agreed with his position, saying trust, honesty and shared values matter more in a marriage, others disagreed and maintained that a partner’s sexual history remains an important consideration when making a lifelong commitment.
Extra News Nigeria could not independently verify the personal account involving Dr Zo’s friend. The doctor presented it as an experience that informed the advice he shared publicly.
Relationship experts have long maintained that couples should have open and honest conversations about their expectations, values and past experiences before marriage. They also note that different individuals place different levels of importance on issues such as previous relationships, making compatibility and mutual understanding key factors in a successful union.
Dr Zo’s remarks add to an ongoing public conversation about modern relationships, personal values and the expectations many people bring into marriage. As the discussion continues online, many Nigerians have called for greater emphasis on character, respect and communication rather than making decisions based solely on a person’s past relationships.
