- Joe Igbokwe has defended First Lady Oluremi Tinubu following criticism over her recent remarks to young Nigerians on self-reliance.
IKEJA, LAGOS — Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, has defended Oluremi Tinubu after comments she made to Nigerian youths attracted reactions on social media. In a statement shared online, Igbokwe said the First Lady’s advice had been misunderstood and unfairly criticised.
According to him, the advice given by Oluremi Tinubu was intended to encourage young Nigerians to embrace self-help and entrepreneurship. He expressed concern over what he described as increasing attacks on public figures on social media, even when they offer what he believes are sincere suggestions.
Igbokwe also criticised some young Nigerians for what he described as a desire for wealth without hard work and success without the necessary values of education, character and morality. He said social media has become a platform where prominent individuals face insults and criticism for expressing their opinions.
The APC chieftain further urged young people to understand the background and life experiences of the First Lady before criticising her remarks. He maintained that Nigerians would eventually appreciate the message behind her comments and called for greater understanding and respect in public discussions.
