Three years after one of Nigeria’s most talked-about examination controversies, Ejikeme Mmesoma is reaching the end of her JAMB sanction. Her three-year ban is due to expire this July.
ABUJA, NIGERIA — Ejikeme Mmesoma, the Anambra State student at the centre of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, result forgery controversy, is set to complete the three-year ban imposed by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) this July. The sanction followed the board’s findings that the result she presented had been altered.
According to JAMB, investigations conducted in 2023 concluded that Mmesoma manipulated her UTME result to show a score that differed from the one contained in the board’s records. The examination body subsequently invalidated the disputed result and announced a three-year ban, preventing her from participating in its examinations during the period. A committee established by the Anambra State Government also reviewed the matter before submitting its findings.
The case attracted nationwide attention after Mmesoma initially maintained that the result she presented was authentic. JAMB, however, insisted that its records showed otherwise and released evidence to support its position. Following the investigation, the student apologised publicly, while the board maintained the disciplinary measures already announced.
The controversy generated widespread debate about examination integrity, the security of digital examination records and the responsibilities of candidates in verifying their results through official channels. It also prompted renewed discussions about the need for stronger public awareness regarding the use of authorised platforms for checking examination results.
The development means Mmesoma will no longer be under the three-year JAMB sanction once it expires this July. However, the end of the ban does not automatically guarantee admission into any tertiary institution. Any future participation in JAMB examinations or admission process will remain subject to the board’s prevailing regulations and eligibility requirements at the time of application.
