Northern governors have taken a new step to address insecurity across the region. The leaders have launched a Security Trust Fund and pledged a monthly contribution of ₦1 billion to support security operations.

KADUNA, NIGERIA — The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) has unveiled the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund (NNSTF) Board and committed ₦1 billion every month to strengthen efforts against insecurity across the region. The decision followed a meeting of the governors, according to a communiqué issued after the gathering.

Why This Happened

According to the communiqué, the governors established the trust fund to mobilise sustainable funding for security operations and improve collaboration among states in Northern Nigeria. The initiative seeks to provide additional resources for tackling banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges affecting the region.

The governors also said the trust fund would complement ongoing efforts by federal security agencies and state governments to restore peace and improve public safety.

What They Said

Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, said the establishment of the trust fund reflects the governors’ commitment to confronting insecurity through a coordinated regional approach.

The communiqué stated that the governors approved a ₦1 billion monthly commitment to support the fund and unveiled the board that will oversee its operations and implementation.

Who Is Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya?

Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya is the Governor of Gombe State and the current Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum. He has coordinated several regional meetings involving governors from the 19 Northern states on issues relating to security, economic development and regional cooperation.

Under his leadership, the forum has continued to advocate stronger collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies to address insecurity in Northern Nigeria.

What This Means for Nigeria

The development means Northern states are seeking a more coordinated and sustainable approach to addressing security challenges through regional funding. If effectively managed, the Security Trust Fund could provide additional resources to support security operations, intelligence gathering and community-based initiatives across the region. Its success, however, will depend on transparent management, accountability and effective collaboration with security agencies.
