LAGOS, NIGERIA — Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Minister of Works Dave Umahi have dismissed claims that the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project caused the recent flooding experienced in parts of Lagos. The officials said the flooding resulted from natural factors and existing drainage challenges, not the highway construction.
According to the governor and the minister, the heavy rainfall that fell across Lagos exceeded the capacity of some drainage channels, leading to flooding in several communities. They maintained that engineers working on the coastal highway have followed approved designs and environmental standards. The officials also said drainage systems linked to the project remain functional and are designed to improve water flow over time.
Speaking on the issue, Dave Umahi said there was no evidence connecting the highway project to the flooding. He explained that the road was built with drainage and flood-control measures that comply with engineering requirements. Babajide Sanwo-Olu also urged residents not to rely on misinformation, adding that the state government continues to invest in drainage infrastructure and flood management across Lagos.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of the Federal Government’s flagship infrastructure projects and is expected to connect several coastal states while improving transportation and economic activities.
