During plenary, senators expressed concern over recurring attacks on Nigerians residing in South Africa and urged the Federal Government to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels. The lawmakers said Nigeria must protect the rights and interests of its citizens abroad while ensuring that those responsible for any attacks face justice. According to the Senate, the fresh probe will examine recent incidents and recommend appropriate measures.
The Senate also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant government agencies to intensify engagement with South African officials. Lawmakers stressed the need for stronger diplomatic efforts to prevent further attacks and improve the safety of Nigerians living, studying and doing business in the country. They said Nigeria and South Africa share longstanding diplomatic and economic ties that should promote mutual respect and the protection of citizens.
