Peter Obi Faces Criticism from Ali Modu Sheriff

Fresh political criticism has emerged against Peter Obi. Former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff says the NDC Party leader is not qualified to ask President Bola Tinubu to resign.

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Ali Modu Sheriff, a former Governor of Borno State, has criticised Peter Obi, saying the former Labour Party presidential candidate is the least qualified person to demand the resignation of President Bola Tinubu. Sheriff made the remarks during a public interview, where he also accused Obi of failing to openly condemn the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Biafra agitation.

According to Sheriff, Obi has consistently avoided taking a clear position against IPOB and the separatist movement. He alleged that Obi’s silence on the issue has contributed to political divisions in the country. Sheriff further claimed that anyone seeking to lead Nigeria should publicly support the country’s unity and reject actions capable of threatening national cohesion.

Speaking on the controversy, Sheriff said, “He is pursuing the division of Nigeria. Peter Obi is the most unqualified person to ask President Bola Tinubu to resign.” He also alleged that Obi has never condemned Biafra or IPOB, arguing that such a position weakens his criticism of the current administration. Sheriff did not provide specific examples to support the allegation during his comments.

Peter Obi has, on several occasions, maintained that he supports a united Nigeria built on justice, equity and fairness. While he has criticised insecurity and the Federal Government’s handling of national issues, Obi has repeatedly stated that he believes in resolving grievances through dialogue and constitutional means. At the time of filing this report, Obi had not publicly responded to Sheriff’s latest remarks.

The development means political exchanges between leading opposition figures and members of the ruling establishment are likely to continue as discussions over governance, national unity and the country’s political future intensify. Nigerians are expected to watch closely for any response from Peter Obi or the NDC Party regarding the allegations made by Ali Modu Sheriff.
