According to a statement released by Infantino, FIFA’s independent judicial bodies reached their decision under the FIFA Disciplinary Code without outside influence.
Infantino said public comments surrounding the case had prompted him to restate FIFA’s position on disciplinary matters. He explained that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee operates independently and reviews each case based on the applicable regulations and the available facts. He added that the autonomy of the judicial bodies remains essential to protecting the credibility and integrity of world football.
The FIFA president also confirmed that he discussed the matter with United States President Donald Trump after receiving a phone call from the American leader. According to Infantino, he informed Trump that the disciplinary process remained active and that only the competent FIFA judicial bodies could determine the outcome. “FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them,” Infantino said. He added that while he sometimes agrees or disagrees with disciplinary decisions, he always respects the autonomy of the bodies responsible for making them.
The controversy intensified after Trump publicly acknowledged contacting FIFA regarding Balogun’s suspension. The US president also questioned the decision of the Brazilian referee who issued the red card. Belgium’s Foreign Minister described FIFA’s reversal of the suspension as “incomprehensible,” while European Union Sports Commissioner Glenn Micallef said disciplinary decisions belong to sporting authorities rather than politicians. FIFA later rejected Belgium’s appeal against the decision.
