A simple typing mistake almost cost a customer ₦50,000. The subscriber later recovered the money after contacting Airtel Nigeria for assistance.

LAGOS, NIGERIA — A Nigerian man has praised Airtel Nigeria after the telecommunications company reversed a ₦50,000 data purchase that he mistakenly made for another phone number. The customer shared his experience on social media, explaining that he intended to buy a 300GB data bundle for his own line but accidentally entered a different number with a similar ending.

According to the customer, he contacted the recipient of the data purchase shortly after discovering the error. He said he explained the situation and forwarded proof of the transaction. However, he claimed the recipient initially suspected it was a scam and later told him there was nothing she could do about the mistake. He also alleged that she stopped responding to his messages.

The customer said he then reached out to Airtel Nigeria’s customer care service and provided the transaction ID along with other requested details. According to him, the company reviewed the complaint and later reversed the ₦50,000 as airtime, allowing him to purchase the intended data bundle for his own line. He expressed appreciation to the network provider for resolving the issue.

Mistaken airtime and data purchases are common among mobile subscribers, especially when phone numbers differ by only one or two digits. Telecommunications companies often advise customers to verify phone numbers carefully before completing transactions, while resolution of such cases may depend on the circumstances and the provider’s policies.

The development means mobile subscribers may have options for resolving certain transaction errors by promptly contacting their service provider and providing relevant transaction details. Customers are also encouraged to confirm recipient numbers before making airtime or data purchases to reduce the risk of costly mistakes.
