PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS — A Nigerian woman has shared an emotional account of her late mother’s treatment, saying she spent close to N1 million in a private hospital before doctors referred her to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) in Rivers State. Her comments were contained in a social media post that has attracted widespread reactions.
According to the woman, she witnessed serious challenges while seeking medical care for her mother. She said the experience left her shocked and described Nigeria’s healthcare system as one that has “totally collapsed.” The grieving daughter also stated that many Nigerians are “living on borrowed life” because of the condition of healthcare services.
In her post, she wrote, “I don’t wish Nigeria on anyone. The health system has totally collapsed.” She added that she spent nearly N1 million in a private hospital in one day before her mother was referred to UPTH, where she said the situation became even more difficult.
Nigeria’s healthcare sector has faced repeated complaints over inadequate facilities, shortage of medical personnel and the high cost of treatment. Many families often struggle to access quality healthcare, leading to renewed calls for increased investment and reforms in the sector.
