Kenneth Okonkwo Explains why former Vice President Atiku Abubakar did not choose a running mate from the South-East.

ABUJA, FCT — Kenneth Okonkwo has said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar did not pick a running mate from the South-East because of legal and political considerations. According to the actor and politician, the decision was influenced by provisions of the Electoral Act and issues relating to party loyalty.

Okonkwo said the choice of a running mate is not based only on regional demands or political sentiments. He explained that parties often consider legal requirements, electoral strategy and the commitment of key political figures before making such decisions.

According to him, the South-East produced many capable politicians who could serve in top positions, but the circumstances surrounding the selection process made it difficult for the region to secure the vice-presidential slot. He added that loyalty within political parties remains an important factor in major decisions.

The issue of power distribution and political representation has remained a major topic in Nigeria since the 2023 general elections. Several political groups and stakeholders from the South-East have continued to call for greater representation in key national positions.

The development means discussions over political inclusion and zoning arrangements may remain part of conversations ahead of future elections. It also highlights the continued interest in how major political parties make strategic decisions that could shape their electoral fortunes.
