Former actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has accepted his appointment as spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections.

ABUJA, FCT — Atiku Abubakar has appointed Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson, weeks after the actor-turned-politician criticised reports surrounding the vice-presidential selection within the opposition camp. Okonkwo has now accepted the role and expressed gratitude for the appointment.

Reacting to his appointment, Kenneth Okonkwo said he gives all the glory to God and thanked Atiku for the opportunity to serve. He also praised the former vice president for his willingness to embrace dialogue and accommodate differing opinions within the political movement.

According to Okonkwo, the appointment demonstrates that political leaders can work with individuals who express independent views. He further expressed confidence that the interests of the South-East had been adequately addressed within the party’s arrangement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The appointment comes only weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised reports about the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and its alleged vice-presidential selection process. His acceptance of the new role signals a renewed alignment with Atiku and the opposition’s preparations for the next election cycle.

Kenneth Okonkwo, a former presidential campaign spokesperson and prominent political commentator, has remained active in Nigeria’s political space in recent years. Atiku Abubakar, who served as Nigeria’s vice president from 1999 to 2007, continues to play a major role in opposition politics and coalition-building efforts.

The development means Atiku’s political camp is strengthening its communication team as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace. It also suggests that efforts are ongoing to address regional concerns and maintain unity within the opposition ahead of the next presidential contest.
