Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful Peter Obi have described the successful conduct of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention as another defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, urging party members and citizens to move quickly from celebration to the urgent task of rebuilding the nation.

In a statement released after the convention held in Abuja, Obi expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of the party, particularly the National Chairman, David Mark, whose “calm and steady guidance” he said provided direction at a critical time for the party and the country. The convention, which drew delegates and stakeholders from across Nigeria, was seen as a major test of the opposition party’s unity and readiness ahead of future political contests.

Obi also commended the convention organizing committee led by former Cross River State governor Liyel Imoke, praising the team’s diligence, sacrifice, and attention to detail. According to him, the committee ensured that the event was not only held successfully despite several challenges but also delivered outcomes that could shape the party’s future direction.

Addressing delegates, party faithful, volunteers, and supporters across the country and in the diaspora, Obi thanked them for what he described as their resilience and unwavering belief in democracy. He noted that their commitment once again proved that democratic institutions thrive when citizens refuse to surrender to discouragement or forces seeking to weaken the system.

However, beyond the celebrations, the former Labour Party presidential candidate stressed that Nigeria’s current realities demand immediate action. He pointed to worsening economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and widespread uncertainty among citizens as critical issues that require urgent and decisive solutions.

According to Obi, the success of the convention must not be treated merely as a political event but as a renewed commitment to nation-building. He said the focus must now shift toward providing practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, strengthening democratic institutions, and restoring hope to millions of Nigerians struggling under difficult socio-economic conditions.

The statement comes at a time when opposition politics in Nigeria is gaining renewed momentum, with the ADC convention widely viewed as a significant development in the build-up to the 2027 general elections. Political observers say Obi’s remarks may resonate strongly with Nigerians seeking an alternative political direction amid growing public concerns over governance and economic conditions.
